Back again for another fun month of book suggestions? Here are the things Kristin and I have been reading since the last wrap-up. Be sure to tell us if you see any of your favorite reads, something on the never-ending To-Be-Read list, or if you know of a comparable title we might enjoy. Thanks again for reading! Write on.

Kamryn:

April hasn’t been a super productive month for me reading-wise, but I do have a few new reads to report.

So, as I’ve mentioned several times, one of my favorite series I read last year was Marissa Meyer’s Renegades series, regarding superheroes/villains and the good and bad nature within both. Because I enjoyed this series so much, I was curious about some of Meyer’s other works and went for what I think might be her most well-known series, The Lunar Chronicles. I’d always heard about it, but never read it before.

Essentially, The Lunar Chronicles are sci-fi retellings of famous fairytales. I talked about this some within my last blog “Freshening Fairytales”, which you can read by clicking here. Currently, I’ve finished B1, Cinder, which features a cyborg version of Cinderella (of course with a notably different setting and twists) and B2, Scarlet, which picks up the story with a Red Riding Hood retelling (as well as following Cinder’s plotline set up at the end of B1). Both are high-stakes stories and I’ve really enjoyed them so far. I’ve just started B3, Cress, a take on the classic Rapunzel story and it promises to be a fun read as well, judging off of the first few chapters I’ve gone through. I’m not sure what fairytales the last novel follows as I’ve not gotten there yet, but hopefully I’ll be able to fill you in at the next wrap up. See you then!

Kristin:

For April, I finished out the Scum Villain series. As with all MXTX books, the last comprised of the very last of the story and several extras. And as with all MXTX extras, wow. It was something. But I love that about MXTX where she uses the finale book to really just write whatever she wants about her main cast and is just completely unhinged.

As for the storyline, I love it. It’s still my least favorite of her three novels, but it’s not a bad thing at all. As I mentioned in the MXTX book comparison, Scum Villain has the most unique premise with its use of transmigration and a blend of ancient Chinese and modern culture. It was sad, it was silly and I will definitely reread it in the future.

That’s all for this month! Be sure to let us know what you’re reading and we’ll see you in May! As always, write-on!
